Sabah: We’ll achieve 2.7 million visitors target

KOTA KINABALU: The 2.7 million visitor arrivals target set by Sabah for Visit Malaysia Year 2007 is achievable, said state Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Karim Bujang.

The confidence was based on the current positive visitor arrivals, he told reporters after launching the state level Visit Malaysia Year 2007 campaign yesterday.

He said the state government would work closely with Tourism Malaysia, the airlines, hoteliers and tour operators to make it happen.

Sabah has drawn up a list of more than 80 tourism events for next year.

It submitted 13 of them, including the Cultural Extravaganza, Kaamatan Festival, Regatta Lepa, Sago Fest, Coconut Fest, Kiulu 4M Challenge, Dragon Boat Race and Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon, for inclusion in the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 national calendar.

As part of the preparations to welcome foreign tourists, the Sabah Tourism Board has organised basic English courses for frontliners in the tourism industry, including porters who serve Mount Kinabalu climbers.
