Street foods as tourism product

Authentic local street food that remains popular among the people in this country will be promoted as tourism products to attract tourists looking for gastronomical adventure, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Yen Yen added that selected street food would be featured during the Malaysia Fabulous Food – Malaysia Street Food carnival slated for the first Sunday of December next year.

“Every state is famous for its own specialty and flavour like Laksa Penang, Laksa Johor and Laksa Sarawak and we will promote it in the festival which is part of our Fabulous Food 1Malaysia – A World of Culinary Delights programme launched in October,” she told reporters after launching the Malaysia Fabulous Food – Malaysia Street Food at Taman Seri Tebrau Hawkers Center here Sunday night.

In the programme, the ministry would work closely with various hawkers associations to select the type of food, venues and participants to be promoted during the festival.

Hawkers associations would come up with the list of suggestions on the 10 “Best” or “Must Try” outlets and submit it to the ministry by end of January next year, she said.
