THE thought of hiking up Mount Kinabalu in Sabah has never came to mind until Vincent, my brother in-law proposed a trip earlier this year.
His plan was simple, take a climbing package and attempt to summit Low’s Peak.
I hesitated at first and had wanted to stay at the Kinabalu Park to photograph bugs.
But after Michelle, my wife agreed to be a part of the summit team, I jumped on the bandwagon.
Our journey to the foothills began with a two-hour van ride from Kota Kinabalu.
As we checked-in, our booking hit a snag.
We were supposed to ascend via the Timpohon trail which is said to be a shorter route to the mountain base camp in Laban Rata.
This route is expected to take about six hours. Instead, we were given the Mesilau trail which is longer.
Having spent nearly half the day at the park headquarters, we were given an hour’s taxi ride to the Mesilau Nature Resort.
To my surprise, I found the resort was well-managed and our team was given a steamboat dinner before departing for Laban Rata.
On the Mesilau trail, we took more than 11 hours to reach our destination.
