‘Tattoos: Modern Expressions’ exhibition at Kuching Hilton Hotel

KUCHING: Tattoo enthusiasts or those interested to learn more about the body arts might want to check out ‘Tattoos: Modern Expressions’ exhibition at the Hilton Hotel here from March 8 till 10.

Featuring a host of local and international artistes such as 30-year-old veteran in Borneo motifs Robert Mayau from Kapit, Sarawak’s very own award winning portrait and traditional Borneo hand-tapping technique tattooist Sylvester Juli of Miri, the show is something that an enthusiast would not want to miss.

Among those to be featured include Singapore’s very own Bing SkinGraphix tattoo studio that specialises in oriental and Japanese style tattooing; and Ion 3 that specialises in custom needle making for tattoos. Ion 3 is currently customising needles for leading artistes in Sweden.

Also featured will be the well known Sabahan Jim Losario of Black Ink Industry Tattoo Studio. Specialising in all styles and colours including oriental and portraits, the studio is very well known in the neighbouring state.

“The primary purpose of the ‘tattoos – modern expressions’ event is to show appreciation of the Sarawak’s unique tattooing background which is still largely misunderstood by our modern but somewhat conservative community.

“At the same time, this exhibition would act as an awareness and educational platform to dismiss negative thoughts on tattoo and the art of tattooing which sometimes can easily be linked to gangsterism, cult, Satanism and the likes,” said main organiser Jeremy
Lo of Monkey Tattoo Studio here.

A world renowned local tattoo artist himself, Lo, who specialises in Sarawak stylised tribal tattoo, added that the event will also feature variations of traditional and modern tattooing, as well as the varieties of artwork of professional tattoo artists from far and near.
