Tourism in Miri to get a big boost

MIRI: Sarawak wants to show the world that it has the means to preserve the environment while generating high income from it through eco-tourism.

“Environment is an issue that concerns everybody. For us, we acknowledge that it is important to conserve and preserve the environment. It is equally important that we make some money out of it,” says Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg during a working visit looking for tourism potentials in Sibuti, Lambir and Bakam near here yesterday.

He said the three places were blessed with rich flora and fauna, many of which were unique to the areas. Also, the areas are rich in culture and heritage due to the population mix.

During the visit yesterday, Abang Johari also announced that the Bekenu Waterfront would be upgraded. It would involve the building of a bridge across Sg Sibuti to connect Bekenu Bazaar and Kpg Rambai.

In Bakam Point, a mangrove cruise would be introduced to allow tourists to enjoy the vegetation and crocodiles sunbathing along the banks, and firefly at night, he added.

“These projects will be implemented this year.”

On another subject, the minister said that the tourism corridor at North Yu Seng Road would be extended for another 100 metres “due to its huge popularity among locals and tourists alike”.
