24 new routes up Mount Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: FOUR world-class rock climbers charted 24 new routes for enthusiasts of the extreme activity on Mount Kinabalu in Kundasang, last month.

They spent three weeks in the upper reaches of the 4,095m mountain and left yesterday.

The climbers were Yuji Hirayama from Japan, Caroline Ciavaldini of France, James Pearson from the United Kingdom and Daniel Wood from the United States.

Sponsored by Mountain Torq Sdn Bhd, a company that operates unique routes on the mountain, the four explored various peaks to establish rock climbing routes during their stay.

Yuji, on his second rock-climbing expedition on the mountain, revealed the surface routes they had charted, including those for beginners as well as for advanced enthusiasts.

"My trip this year, with the other climbers, was a good one because the weather was kind to us and we managed to scale many peaks," said Yuji, who helped chart four routes last year.

"During our stay, we set off as a group or sometimes we split into two," said the 43-year-old climber, who runs a rock-climbing gym in Iruma, about 50km from Tokyo.
