Crowd attending Sarawak Rainforest World Music Festival continues to swell

KUCHING: This year’s Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) got off to a great start with more than 6,000 revellers recorded on the first day yesterday.

The 2011 edition registered 1,000 revellers less.

A visibly delighted Minister of Tourism Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the volume increase meant the promotional efforts had paid off and that interest in this annual extravaganza was on the rise.

To ensure the RWMF continue to remain fresh and sustainable, fringe events would be held in the city starting next year as a prelude to the festival which is traditionally at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV).

Abang Johari explained that the fringe events would be similar to workshops held during the festival proper.

“We want something which is informal and interactive for the audience,” he said, adding that music transcends all boundaries.

Fringe events which could be held at places such as the Kuching Waterfront or the Sarawak Museum could be simple ones like basking to attract young and aspiring musicians.

Abang Johari said he believed this year’s RWMF would see more revellers than last year’s based on the first day ticket sales.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it reached 22,000 this year compared to 21,000 in 2011.”
