KUCHING: The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) starting today promises to live up to its name by encouraging green practices to reduce adverse effects on the environment.
Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip said the RWMF aims to be a platform to increase environmental awareness apart from being a showcase of musical talents from all over the world.
“For this festival, we are expecting some 27,000 visitors for the duration of three nights from July 13 to 15. The many visitors will certainly lead to an increased risk of pollution to the surrounding environment.
“Therefore, for this RWMF, we will be encouraging the use of green products among the traders when packaging food,” he told a press conference after a tree planting event in conjunction with RWMF at Damai Central here yesterday.
A total of 300 trees were planted around Damai Central during the event which was also attended by Assistant Minister of Tourism (Local Events and Products) Datuk Gramong Juna and Sarawak Tourism Board chief executive officer Datuk Rashid Khan.
Supporting the event were Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation.
