What to do in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

Repeat “Kota Kinabalu” three times. It’s like a tongue twister that does not really twist your tongue. Why did we visit this place, you ask? Just the name makes you curious enough, eh. Plus the 75% off ticket sale, why not? So, I’m not really a pro blogger or writer, I just journal, and here’s my take on visiting Kota Kinabalu.

#1: A PLACE TO STAY

We stayed in a backpakers place called POD’S THE BACKPACKERS HOME. It was really nice, in my opinion.

The rooms are all clean and simple. The staff are kind and they speak good English.

They are also very helpful when you need some direction advice and tourist attractions.

As of now, they have two branches that are found in Kuala Lumpur and in Kota Kinabalu.

In Kota Kinabalu, their location is great, it’s inside a compound called “Api Api Apartment” and it’s 15 minutes away from the airport.

In the compound, there are local dining areas, McDonald’s, a grocery store, among other stores.

Also, there’s a taxi stand right in front of the building. Another thing I like about Pod’s is, they provide free breakfast EVERYDAY: healthy bread, jams, peanut butter, coffee and tea.

If you’re on a tight budget, that’s really helpful. (If you don’t like Pod’s, there are a LOT of Backpackers Home, just walk around, try Gaya Street, everything is there).

#2 WHEN IN KOTA KINABALU: WALK

You can basically walk the four corners of this city. That is, if you’re fond of walking. The weather is a bit hot but not too humid, so we find it a good walking place.

There are restaurants in every corner, haha. And it’s very cheap (I want to go back now). Wear comfortable walking sandals or shoes. Actually, wear whatever you’re comfortable with.
