Kota Kinabalu: The Kota Kinabalu International Film Festival (KKIFF) Opening Night will showcase a series of award-winning short films from all over the world.
The premier of KKIFF Opening Night today (June 5) begins with an Indonesian short film called Heaven Is Not A Place that was funded by the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority.
The film is based on one Laura who runs a backpackers' lodge in Kota Kinabalu who is captivated and curious about a frequent tourist, Albert who always travels to the Sulug Island without doing the usual tourist activities.
Albert instead only watches the sea from the beach, in silence seemingly waiting for someone.
Followed by that is a short documentary from Myanmar, Traveller which tells of a disabled woman's fight against discrimination by leading a movement to create a barrier-free society.
Next is a short Indonesian film, On Stopping the Rain, which tells of a girl anxiously waiting for the rain to stop because she wants to parade her new shoes around and how she takes matters into her own hands.
Come Hell Or High Water, on the other hand, is a Malaysian short documentary on a first-hand account of an interracial marriage in Malaysia between TMA, a regular Malay man, and Sherine, a typical Chinese woman in a span of 24 years.
