Three villages with homestay in Labuan

LABUAN: Homestay industry in Labuan has been playing its role in providing rooms for visitors coming to this duty-free island.

Director of Labuan Corporation Arts, Culture and Tourism Department, Mahathir Abdul Hamid said currently Labuan has three villages with homestay, namely Homestay Patau-Patau II, Homestay Bukit Kuda and Homestay Sg Labu.

“Around 79 units of homestay from the three villages provide around 97 rooms for the visitors or tourists to Labuan.

“Another two units of homes are in the process of getting approval to join the homestay programme here,” he said during the launching of Visit My Kampung and the new logo of Malaysian Homestay for Labuan FT recently.

In year 2014, the national income derived from homestay was RM349,873.

Up to May  this year, the hometay recorded an income of RM52,380, showing an increase of RM7,113 compared to the same period last year where the total income within the period was RM45,267.

The income shows that with the homestay, the villagers were able to increase their income by becoming entrepreneurs in tourism-related business.

“The homestay programme is also expected to contribute to the national income worth RM38 billion with 28 million tourist arrivals as envisioned by the ministry.

“Therefore, the Tourism and Culture Ministry is committed to realise the vision by doing many programmes and activities to promote this country to the world.

“One of them is Visit My Kampung programme where this will attract the villagers to get involved in tourism and cultural activities here,” he said.
