Works on WWII memorial in Miri to be completed next week


MIRI: Restoration works on the Second World War (WWII) Memorial Park in St Columba’s Church Cemetery are expected to be completed by next week.

Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai said the restoration is a community project undertaken by Miri City Council (MCC), St Columba’s parish and Golden Hill Memorial Park Berhad as the contractor cum the main sponsor of the project.

“We are going to beautify this park as one of the tourist attractions for Miri, and the landscape of the park will be maintained by Miri City Council (MCC),” he told the media after inspecting the project site yesterday.

He added there would be a blessing ceremony during All Soul’s Day on Nov 1 at 4pm to mark the completion of the restoration project. Golden Hill Memorial Park Miri managing director Albert Chan said the restoration project was about 90 per cent completed.

“The restoration works commenced on Sept 1 this year which includes major upgrading, improvement and refurbishing works,” he added.

Chan further said they were now in the process of erecting a monument made of granite at the entrance to the cemetery and constructing a covered walkway and beautifying the park with green landscape.

He revealed that the company would contribute six garden chairs and a round table made from granite at the park for the convenience of visitors. Others present was the chairman of Restoration Project Committee, Rt Revd Bishop Soloman Cheong.

According to history, the World War II Memorial Park was constructed in memory of the 28 civilians of various nationalities executed by the Japanese occupying forces at Lambir Hill on June 13, 1945.
