Kaamatan also to spread love and friendship

Kota Kinabalu: Kaamatan celebration is not only about preserving culture but there is a more noble intention to it – promoting love and friendship.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who is also Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) President, said Kaamatan Festival is a perfect time for people to get to know each other.

"In line with the Kaamatan Festival's theme this year, 'Pibabasan om Piombolutan' (Peace and Friendship), the Kaamatan celebration is a platform to foster the spirit of unity, camaraderie, mutual respect and understanding among the people of Sabah," he said during the launching of City Hall's Kaamatan Carnival at Padang Merdeka, here, Friday.

He said the carnival is one of the main attractions of the city and hoped it will enhance public awareness to strengthen unity and preserve culture and customs.

Earlier, Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai urged the people, especially those residing in the city, to help City Hall achieve its aspiration of becoming a clean, green and liveable city.

The two-day carnival kicked off with various activities being lined up, among them traditional sports and food exhibitions, Sugandoi Kaamatan and Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan competitions.
