Lack of infrastructure hampers Kudat tourism

KUDAT: Efforts to maximise Kudat’s tourism potential is hampered by the lack of infrastructure, said Special Tasks Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang.

“With beautiful islands, waters, beaches such as Tanjung Simpang Mangayau, and the longest esplanade in Sabah, Kudat has high tourism potentials that can be exploited.

“But what is lacking in Kudat is infrastructure,” he said when met after a dialogue with the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) here, yesterday.

According to Teo who is also the Tanjong Kapur Assemblyman, his office forwarded several proposals to the EPU during the meeting, one of which is realigning the Tanjung Simpang Mangayau Road.

He said the road is too near to the beach which limits the expansion of tourism facilities in the area. He has applied for RM10 million in allocation for the realignment purpose and another RM5 million to upgrade several facilities along the 500-metre long Sidek Esplanade to build a new surau, stalls, and to maintain the place.

“Since it was built, the Sidek Esplanade has not been maintained properly due to the lack of funds. So, it is time for it to be maintained and upgraded.

“We have also applied for other allocations to build new roads in Kampung Tanjung Kapur, Kampung Bahagia, and other villages.

“We believe that with the new roads, we can organise the village lots which are now being occupied by squatters.

“This will enable us to perhaps gazette the areas as villages to resolve the squatter issue,” he said, adding that the tightly-spaced houses in the villages have become a fire hazard.
